REVELATION 6:9-17Martyrs and Darkness

PDF Read More

As we continue in chapter 6, we see the opening of the fifth and sixth seals. In Revelation 5:8 we saw that God keeps the prayers of the saints always before Him as incense in golden bowls meaning our prayers are precious to Him. In Revelation 6:9 we see that God allows those who have been martyred, because of their testimony and their love for the Word of God, to have a special place underneath the altar in Heaven.

REVELATION 6:1-8 The Four Horsemen

PDF Read More

As we begin to get into some of the more symbolic portions of Revelation, we will slow our study down in order to leave plenty of time for discussion and investigation of interpretations. As with all of Revelation, let us remember that although comprised of various scenes and visions, Revelation is one cohesive letter sent from Jesus to seven literal churches and through inspiration of the Holy Spirit preserved for all churches of all generations

I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll: The focus of Revelation 4 was the throne. Here, John begins with reference to the throne, but now shifted his focus to the scroll held by the enthroned Lord.

REVELATION 3:14-22 Laodicea

PDF Read More

The church at Laodicea demonstrated what Jesus thought about a lukewarm church—it made Him want to vomit. Some have wrongly thought that His preference for them to be “either hot or cold” meant that He would rather people not even go to church (be cold) than be lukewarm Christians. Rather, I believe His words indicate His desire for Christians to be useful and appealing. Hot water is useful, and cold water is refreshing. Both are pleasant and good. Only tepid and lukewarm water is distasteful and disgusting.

REVELATION 3 REVELATION 3:7-13 Philadelphia

PDF Read More

The church at Philadelphia was one of only two churches who received only praise from the Lord without any condemnation or correction. Jesus told them that because of the faithfulness that He placed before them an “open door that no one could shut.” We don’t know exactly what that open door was, but it must have included more opportunities to be witnesses for the Lord. Jesus would want them to continue to keep His Word and not deny His name (v 8). He promised that all those who opposed them would someday bow humbly and acknowledge that they had been correct in their devotion to Christ.

REVELATION 3:1-6 Sardis

PDF Read More

The church at Sardis had a good earthly reputation, but God saw what was in their hearts. Outwardly, their deeds looked promising and spiritual. They were known to be a church where things were happening. But God said their deeds were “incomplete,” and that they needed to strengthen their ministries that were about to die. As always, when the church strays away from her proper purpose, the command from Jesus is “repent.” Change your thoughts, change your habits, but most of all, change your hearts. Live to see your name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

REVELATION 2:18-29 Thyatira

PDF Read More

Here is a little bit of history about THYATIRA from Halley’s Bible Handbook. Thyatira was perhaps the least illustrious of the seven cities of Revelation. Its history was uneventful, and it is scarcely mentioned by ancient writers. Coinage suggests that, lying as it did on a great highway linking two river valleys, Thyatira was a garrison town for many centuries. The city was a center of commerce, and the records preserve references to more trade guilds than those listed for any other Asian city. Lydia, whom Paul met in Philippi, was a Thyatiran seller of “turkey red,” a purple dye for which Thyatira was famous (Acts 16:14).

REVELATION 2:12-17 Pergamum

PDF Read More

As we continue our study of the letters to the churches of the Revelation, we arrive next at Pergamum. The church there lived in a very hostile environment (“where Satan has his throne” v. 13) and had already faced deadly persecution. They had remained faithful to the Gospel, but not faithful to a life of purity. Jesus warned them to reject those who embraced heresies which promoted immorality. The only weapon needed to battle such heresies is the sword that proceeds from Jesus’ mouth – the Word of God. Truth always defeats the lies that Satan tries to sell. But God’s people are called to have ears to hear that Truth and overcome the temptations and tricks of impurity.

REVELATION 2:8-11 Smyrna

PDF Read More

JUST A REMINDER… As we continue in our study of the letters to the churches of the Revelation, we arrive at Smyrna. Along with Philadelphia, it was one of only two of the seven churches that received no condemnation from Jesus. They lived in a time and area of persecution, but they remained loyal to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. They received encouragement that the persecution would be for a limited time (10 days); and if it resulted in death, they would be rewarded with the “crown of life.” This is a great reminder to us to remain faithful in the midst of whatever trials come our way. God is watchful over us and will limit the extent of the persecution or reward our faithfulness with eternal life.

REVELATION 2:1 REVELATION 2:1-7 -Ephesus

PDF Read More

This material will be used for the February 15th class as we begin looking at the letters to the seven churches of Revelation. The first church is Ephesus, and it would be a good preparation to read through Paul’s letter to the same church in our NT book of Ephesians. Paul urged them to continue to grow in their faith and their love for each other. In Ephesians 1:18-19 Paul prayed “that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what is the wealth of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the mighty working of His strength.”

REVELATION 1

PDF Read More

We will be studying the book of Revelation for the next 9- 1/2 months. We will not be studying lessons about Revelation, but we will devote ourselves to studying the text right from the Bible. Each week I will print some resources for you to use as helps, but these are to supplement your own study of the Word. Read them before you come to Sunday School each week and be ready to share what the Lord reveals to you through Revelation. There will also be a worksheet from Precept Ministries for you to use to jot down notes (unless you would rather just write in the margins of your Bible).

DEAR FAMILY OF FAITH, As we prepare to jump into our study of Revelation, I want to ask that each of you take some time to read through the whole book in one sitting. Before you begin, pray that the Lord will show you what He wants you to know. Depending on how fast you read, it should take you between one to three hours. Once you’ve read it all the way through, write down three or four thoughts or themes that the Holy Spirit impresses upon you from the Revelation. When you have done that, send them to me by email at [email protected] so that I can see what messages God is sending to our church through His Word.
